About the Artist

Pearl Lavinia Hill was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to Mary E. (Breon) and Roland C. Hill, a furniture manufacturer. Hill attended the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia where in 1907 she received a certificate in drawing for teachers. The following year she became the first female student to win a prize for life drawing. She received the Emma S. Crozer prize of $20 for best work in drawing.
