About the Artist
Clara Ellis studied in New York City in the Woman’s Art Department of the Cooper Institute, today known as the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She received a certificate in 1872[1] and in 1873[2]. Ellis’s studies included ornamental drawing and figure drawing from the cast under Miss Fannie Powell and Franz Venino, and painting under Carl Hecker.
